Title
Basic concepts for documenting SAS projects: examples of documentation styles used for SAS projects, programs and variables.
Abstract
This paper starts a larger project to write a comprehensive book on best practices for documenting SAS programs. The ideas in the paper are some present documentation styles used by the author. By presenting this paper the author seeks to begin a discussion in the SAS user community, so that a book can be written that gathers more of the best practices many SAS users are using. The paper will present three document styles at three different levels of scope. A document style will be presented that is used for project documentation, another for program documentation and a third style for documenting variables. This third style allows other researchers to repeat the modeling in research situations with SAS, an alternative language or simply conceptually. A review of SAS user papers found that concern documentation is also presented.
